The open middle school band director position was filled by Gabby Nguyen during the summer.
Nguyen plans on not only teaching the middle school kids, but also plans to help the high school band be successful.
“I’m excited that we are getting to learn the fight song because we didn’t get to learn it last year,” seventh grade Seagan Kelley said.
Getting the high school marching band to make it all the way to state, and hopefully state finals, is Nguyen’s goal for the high school.
“My goal for the middle school is just to have everyone grow and get used to the new schedule,” Nguyen said.
Nguyen first attended the summer band camp where she was introduced to all the kids. She describes them as a bunch of goofy kids in the best way possible.
“My favorite part of having Miss Nguyen is that I love the way she teaches,” seventh grade Maya Floyd said. “Along with the way she cheers you up after a hard day with the biggest smile and enthusiasm ever.”
After attending Tarleton State University, Nguyen earned her bachelor’s degree in music education. She has played instruments for 12 years including the trumpet, her main instrument, and others such as French horn, flute and saxophone.
“I started thinking about becoming a band director my senior year of high school,” Nguyen said. “I wanted to be a band director because I wanted to give kids a safe space like I had growing up.”
Middle school principal Matt Rivers hopes for growth within the band and a piqued interest of students towards the program.
“Miss Nguyen is off to a great start,” Rivers said. “Her personality and excitement for the band is exactly what we have been looking for. We have heard great things from students, parents, and community members.”
