Junior high girls huddle up in prayer

As morning sunlight streams over the high school, students huddle inside the front entrance, humming along with the strum of soft guitar music.

See You At The Pole is an public school nationwide event that takes place annually on the fourth Wednesday of September. Students from all campuses involved in the FCA-sponsored tradition gather around the flag-pole for an early morning of worship, bible study and prayer.

“Daniel Soto, our speaker this year, spoke to the crowd about James 4:10, about turning to prayer first, not last, and staying humble,” High School FCA Sponsor Robynn Jones said. “Mallory Melton broke the ice by leading us in a couple of songs. To have these past Wall graduates come back shows how much this community’s impact stays with our kids long after they have moved away.”

Wall graduates Mallory Melton and Nathan Miller lead worship.

According to Jones, high school FCA members put in a good effort to organize the event, including having to recruit singers and speakers.

“The fact that students put this on from start to finish makes it even more appealing to their peers,” Jones said. “It’s not another adult trying to teach them a lesson. It’s a peer who is going through many of the same struggles as them.”

An aspect of the event that is also appealing to students is worshipping with their peers.

“I really like having a worship set-up that is chill and laid back because most times when you go to worship at a church, it’s really intense and loud,” junior Ashley Allison said. “It’s always great to be around your friends plus getting to worship and pray with them before school.”

This year’s See You At The Pole had a solid turnout of students and staff from across all campuses. Near the end of the gathering, many groups huddled together in a time of prayer before taking on the school day.

“I love seeing our entire district come together,” Jones said. “To see elementary students mixed in with our high schoolers, teachers and staff, junior high kids, parents and community members

– the variety of Wall Hawks that gather at See You at the Pole is truly amazing.”

The student-led event, which began in 1990, is well-cherished among students and staff throughout the Wall community.

“See You At The Pole is cool to attend every year because each time is different,” Allison said. There’s something about just being able to hear everyone’s voice and worshipping at your own school that makes it really special.”
