Lady Hawk Softball Heads Into District

As softball season continues to ramp up, tensions are high in preparation for the team’s biggest rivals. Despite setbacks, the team has pushed onward and forged new bonds with each other. Head softball coach Joe Bain says that covid has played a large role in this team’s complications.
“I would say that we’re a little bit behind,” Bain said. “Due to covid and not playing last year, I feel like we’re trying to play catch up.”
Wall has seven teams in its district, which poses a challenge for this year’s team.
“There’s several really good teams, so we just don’t have one specific rival,” Bain said. “It’s a really tough district. But like any time that you play Ballinger, Clyde, Merkel, Jim Ned, any of those teams, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Senior Taylor Hunt states that things differ from last year because many freshmen are starting on the field compared to years past.
“It’s definitely been a learning experience,” Hunt said
Covid-19 affected players from their skills to the games they played. For some, like senior Kaitlyn Stephens, she did not play much due to several factors.
“It was different from last year because I got to play like 3 games due to corona and me coming back from my ACL tear,” Stephens said.
Even though the season started off rocky, the team is working hard to build and grow every game.
“I think our season started a little rougher than most teams did because we lost a few starting players at the start of district and had to really work around that and bring up freshmen that had to learn the plays faster than everyone else did,” Hunt said. “But we’re on the right track now to win more games and get better every day.”
